0: Disolve 1 tsp sugar in warm water in lrge bowl
1: Sprinkle in yeast
2: let stand 10 minutes, then stir well
3: Combine milk, 1/4 cup sugar, shortening and salt in saucepan
4: Heat until lukewarm and shortening is melted
6: Add to yeast mixture
7: Add 2 3/4 cups flour and beat vigorously with wooden spoon or electric mixer until smooth
8: Gradually stir in remaining 1 c flour
9: Batter will be soft
10: Cover with tea towel
11: Let rise in warm place until doubled about 1 hour
12: Stir down dough and let stand 10 minutes
13: Fill greased muffin cups 1/2 full
14: Let rise until doubled 45 minutes
15: Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden
16: Turn out of pans immediately
17: Serve warm and cool
18: Makes about 18 rolls
